the power of music

I came across an article on Medium that interested me. I wish to share it with you.

It's from Sharone Houri. This article centers around why music touches us the way it does. 

 "What is behind the power of music?" 

 Music is irresistible. It dominates, but only certain people. Music can open the gate to the soul. Listening to music leaves an imprint. This triggers a deep emotional experience. This emotional experience is feeling. This feeling is not the music itself, but the experience it reminds us of. 

This entire experience can be described as:

NOSTALGIA

I've found people like to know when older music came out and what impact it had in the music world. I can assume the song made an impact on them. The song speaks to the world and the world is full of people who long for nostalgia. 

Music reinforces what we long to remember.

Music has the capacity to imitate emotions. Temporal patterns in music mimic emotions. We place those "musical emotions" into life without really trying that hard. This just happens. We have the components to be influenced by music. Music has the power to shape our components of perception.

Pleasurable music activates a certain reward system within us.

We strive for meaning. That's a human condition. Some may take this a step further to say it is the human condition. Music is needed for the emotional connection. This connection allows us to explore our meaning and the meaning of so many items in this world. Music has power.

music ownership: what gives?

The CD business continues to plummet.

CD sales have fallen a whopping 80 percent in the last decade. Sales are about 89 million copies, compared with 450 million 10 years ago. 

What about downloads?

Well, they've gone down by 58 million since peaking in 2012. Bruce Springsteen releases his current boxed set exclusively on vinyl. We're looking at two formats: streaming and vinyl. CD sales are still robust in the country music format.

Older customers are driving the CD format. Will they still? Well, to a point. As older music enthusiasts build their libraries, will they keep adding to their collections? Artists, labels, and record stores have been preparing for the CD's demise for years. That's may be difficult for you to comprehend. It is for me.

Tech is driving music distribution. It has for years. What are we to do? I suppose we should start procuring the "stuff" to get up to date...… like a turntable.

Fans and the media loved Def Leppard. Their songs just wouldn't let go.
Their album Hysteria made sure there was no escape from Def Leppard.
The arrangement of many of these songs made them classics by gripping the rock populace.

This band has created a collection of songs that keep going.

To study the best-selling musicians of all time by album sales, it’s helpful to first take a look at the music business. That's not what it used to be.

The musical landscape is vastly different from the heydays of the 1970s, ‘80s and ‘90s, when vinyl and CD sales peaked.
