saving country music

I ran across a good article about Chris Stapleton, who recently received the Country Music Association awards for Song of the Year, Single of the Year, and Male Vocalist of the Year.

Basically, the article centers on Stapleton.

Chris Stapleton
The article mentions that Stapleton is an artist with substance and is appreciated by his peers.

I told a couple of my colleagues that Chris might have saved a format. Chris is a breath of fresh air. I do like his song Broken Halos, which took the Single and Song of the Year on November 14th. My hope is that Chris continues writing material that is soulful and meaningful.

My role in country music radio is to play Broken Halos with other songs. Playing new music with good, solid tunes already in rotation is where the creative winds start to blow.

Here is a 3 song set I came up with:
  1. John Anderson - Wild and Blue
  2. Chris Stapleton - Broken Halos
  3. Glen Campbell - Gentle On My Mind
Here's another:
  1. The Bellamy Brothers - Lovers Live Longer
  2. Chris Stapleton - Broken Halos
  3. George Jones - He Stopped Loving Her Today
I hope this will give you ideas.

80's country songs

Rosanne Cash
I came across theboot.com for country music playlists. I have seen their 80's country music playlist. I started in country radio in August 1981. I was in country radio all through the 80's.

Here's the link to the playlist: 1980s Country Fans Playlist

I have particular songs on this to point out. If you are in country radio music programming, you might consider these selections.

  • Islands in the Stream - Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers
  • Rosanne Cash - Seven Year Ache
  • All My Ex's Live in Texas - George Strait
  • Why Not Me - The Judds
  • Guitar Town - Steve Earle
  • Can't Even Get the Blues - Reba McEntire
  • I'm No Stranger to the Rain - Keith Whitley
  • Mountain Music - Alabama
There's two that are first number 1's on the Billboard Country Chart: Rosanne Cash and Reba McEntire.

Use these songs in between current country songs. Check out the entire list. Expand your music horizon.

blake shelton tour

Blake Shelton is going on tour in 2019.

Blake's a busy man. This tour isn't a "big" tour, but he's going out. One surprising item in this is who he asked to join him. Well, it's John Anderson and The Bellamy Brothers. Can you say traditional?

What's going on? Blake's new album is traditional. He's gone back to his roots. Well, that's good. But, think about this.... do Blake's fan know these artists? That doesn't seem important now. John and the Bellamys will do just fine.

Is there a shift going on for more classic artists in country?

Blake Shelton

Blake Shelton’s recent album Texoma Shore is pretty damn decent. Not great, but pretty decent. And the record saw Shelton turn a corner back towards the more traditional sound.

He’s taking John Anderson and The Bellamy Brothers on tour in 2019, along with Lauren Alaina and Trace Adkins. Read the story from savingcountrymusic.com

Blake is staying his course.

willie's new album

My Way is the sixty-eighth studio album by Willie Nelson. It was released on September 14, 2018, by Legacy Recordings.

The album is a tribute to Frank Sinatra.

Nelson first teased the album on April 27, 2018. Willie Nelson loves a tribute record. Over the course of his six-decade recording career, he's released albums in honor of country singers Lefty Frizzell and Ray Price, songwriter Cindy Walker, and George and Ira Gershwin.

The two performed at Las Vegas' Golden Nugget in 1984 and also filmed a public service announcement about space technology. On Sinatra's 1994 release "Duets II," they sang "A Foggy Day" together.

Willie swings his way through some of the most beloved songs in the Great American Songbook. The album—which features lush string and horn arrangements—was produced by Buddy Cannon and Matt Rollings.

The album includes familiar tracks like “It Was A Very Good Year,” “Fly Me to the Moon,” “What Is This Thing Called Love” (a duet with nine-time Grammy winner Norah Jones) and the title track.

is excellent music a ridiculous notion?

Great albums were once routine, especially in the 1970's.

The album, long a mainstay of rock canon, is still with us. But, for how long? Seriously. Does anyone know. Does anyone care? The canon was once defined by albums. Are we at the end of an age?
Debbie Harry
With downloading and live streaming, the industry has changed. Has the product suffered as a result? Well, some artists have been moved out of the way. But really, which artists will stand another test of time? That remains to be seen. Don't be discouraged. We only enjoy and contribute what we experience. Perhaps there will be enough that experience great music to keep some of that music to the forefront.

I hope albums still will be canon. That'd be something for us to measure, to take hold of. We'll see.

the power of music

I came across an article on Medium that interested me. I wish to share it with you.

It's from Sharone Houri. This article centers around why music touches us the way it does.
"What is behind the power of music?"

Music is irresistible. It dominates, but only certain people. Music can open the gate to the soul. Listening to music leaves an imprint. This triggers a deep emotional experience. This emotional experience is feeling. This feeling is not the music itself, but the experience it reminds us of.
This entire experience can be described as:

NOSTALGIA

I've found people like to know when older music came out and what impact it had in the music world. I can assume the song made an impact on them. The song speaks to the world and the world is full of people who long for nostalgia.

Music reinforces what we long to remember.

Music has the capacity to imitate emotions. Temporal patterns in music mimic emotions. We place those "musical emotions" into life without really trying that hard. This just happens. We have the components to be influenced by music. Music has the power to shape our components of perception.

Pleasurable music activates a certain reward system within us.
We strive for meaning. That's a human condition. Some may take this a step further to say it is the human condition. Music is needed for the emotional connection. This connection allows us to explore our meaning and the meaning of so many items in this world. Music has power.

music ownership: what gives?

The CD business continues to plummet.

CD sales have fallen a whopping 80 percent in the last decade. Sales are about 89 million copies, compared with 450 million 10 years ago.

What about downloads?

Well, they've gone down by 58 million since peaking in 2012. Bruce Springsteen releases his current boxed set exclusively on vinyl. We're looking at two formats: streaming and vinyl. CD sales are still robust in the country music format.

Chris Stapleton

Older customers are driving the CD format. Will they still? Well, to a point. As older music enthusiasts build their libraries, will they keep adding to their collections? Artists, labels, and record stores have been preparing for the CD's demise for years. That's may be difficult for you to comprehend. It is for me.

Tech is driving music distribution. It has for years. What are we to do? I suppose we should start procuring the "stuff" to get up to date...… like a turntable.

def leppard: mega group

Fans and the media loved Def Leppard. Their songs just wouldn't let go.
Their album Hysteria made sure there was no escape from Def Leppard.
The arrangement of many of these songs made them classics by gripping the rock populace.

u.s. album sales - best selling musicians

To study the best-selling musicians of all time by album sales, it’s helpful to first take a look at the music business. That's not what it used to be.

The musical landscape is vastly different from the heydays of the 1970s, ‘80s and ‘90s, when vinyl and CD sales peaked.

15 greatest double albums

Double albums have always attracted so many. There's more music. Double albums have been big statements. Some would call them concept albums. Often, double albums, present a band's best achievements.

Double albums are (were) popular and Jonny Hughes of goliath.com put together a list of fifteen. Look this over. You may or may not agree on the order, but the list is remarkable. This is a good reference. Use this to explore and add to your own playlists.

the 50 best selling albums in america

You might think albums are a thing of the past. Well, I suppose they are. I don't particularly like writing that but we have to face the facts. Vinyl has gained some resurgence, which may spark your curiosity as to which albums have sold well in the United States.

This list, so far, has tested the time spectrum and is worth noting. I was particularly impressed by the variety of genres. Songs contained in them were hits that made the artist's popularity mainstream. Several of these artists are still popular.

Led Zeppelin

This list is a good reference. Use it to add songs to your personal playlists.

what to write about

Oh yes..... the search on what to write about. This can be a challenge. But, should it be? I say, "no."

So, you're probably wondering what I know on this topic. Well, my advice is start writing. Start writing on subjects in your niche. You might search for trending topics.

Don't waste time on generic content. Pinpoint to inspire and educate.

elvis costello's rise to fame

In 1977, the year I graduated from high school, Elvis Costello hit the music scene in a big way.

"My Aim is True" was originally released on July 22, 1977 in the United Kingdom. New York based Columbia Records were planning a major release of the album in the U.S. later that fall. Costello was looked at as being a highly marketable artist. One item to be overcome was popularity. How to make an artist popular. This is not an easy obstacle to take on. It still isn't.

Columbia Records executives knew they had an amazing product. They actually had two products: the album and Costello.

Columbia went to work. The various departments (radio promotion, sales and publicity) went to a truly combined effort. On November 11th, just a few days after the album's release, the record label received some great news. Rolling Stone Magazine had selected "My Aim is True" as its major album review.

Costello was signed to Columbia after he had performed at a senior management conference in London. What struck the record label's interest was that Elvis Costello was a very serious artist. He had a flamboyant and exciting stage presence which he transformed into a magnetic force where he became one with the audience. The record label though, did not want to promote Costello as a punk-rock artist. So much so, that a memo was distributed among the label's leadership stating he was not a punk rock artist.

Costello, at 23, was a publicity department’s dream. He was a strong songwriter and artist. The music press, major newspapers, and mainstream magazines were all doing major features on him. One item that helped was that his first name was Elvis. Elvis Presley had died on August 16th of the year. That name "Elvis" was staunchly in the minds of the American public. I can't help but have the attitude that this helped. Costello and his new band, the Attractions, were booked for a national club tour, with most tickets reserved by the label for radio, press and retailers.

Costello on the map, and the album—with such favorites as “Watching the Detectives,” “(The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes” and “Welcome to the Working Week”—would peak at just #32 on the sales chart. Elvis was nominated for Best New Artist at the 1978 Grammy Awards.

video storytelling

Video is hot. There's not mistaking it. Video is an excellent way to tell a story. Some say it's the only way to tell a story. That's debatable, I know, but video requires everyone's attention. Even you are not into video yet, take a look at a few a day. This will give you a handle on what is going on.

One thing for sure: videos are watched. Another thing: videos are shared.

Video stimulates the senses in ways written text does not. Research has shown that certain words stimulate our senses. With video, using these "word objects" in the videos really have an impact. Two words are "perfume" and "coffee". Well think of this...... producing a video where the storyteller is drinking a cup of coffee. You get the meaning.

Video done correctly, stimulates many areas of the brain. That's what you want. Stimulation generally garners a response. This is rolled into the field of neuroscience, a very important field. This science helps with understanding why video works so well.

Video is to a point where it can't be ignored. I personally don't use video...... yet. But I watch several and I study them to help with my ideas. The move to video is a process. My process is at the blueprint stage. I am drawing up the plan.

Video is storytelling that informs and entertains. It also constructs new knowledge and develops critical learning skills.

So draw up your plan. If you need help, I can aid you. At least study what video is doing in the marketing realm.
